An Architectural Masterpiece by the Sea
Stretching like a sparkling ribbon across the water, the spectacular pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Sölvesborg connects the historic town center with the modern Ljungaviken district. Spanning an impressive 756 meters, it is not only one of Europe’s longest of its kind but has also become a beloved landmark, attracting visitors from near and far.
Since its inauguration in 2013, the bridge has transformed into more than just a connection. Its innovative design and lighting, which earned second place in the Swedish Lighting Prize in 2014, have made it one of the world’s most fascinating bridges. At dusk, the structure transforms into a glowing artwork, reflected in the waters below—a scene that has been captured in countless Instagram posts and shared worldwide.
Four Seasons Park
At the bridge’s base awaits another architectural gem: the Four Seasons Park. Designed by the world-renowned Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf—also behind celebrated parks in New York and Chicago—the park offers a unique year-round experience. Here, the interplay of plants’ shapes and structures creates a dynamic meadow where each season unveils its own character. Swaying ornamental grasses, vibrant salvias, and “beautifully decaying” plants form a living canvas that constantly renews itself.
The Ice Cream Boat in the Harbor
The area around the bridge has developed into a popular recreational destination where locals and visitors meet. On the inviting wooden deck near the bridge, you can sit with a thermos of coffee and enjoy the view of the water and rich birdlife. For a treat, the nearby Ice Cream Boat offers local delicacies such as herring sandwiches, along with refreshing ice cream.
Slottsparken and Riddarparken
The stroll can continue in multiple directions. In the historic Slottsparken, green lawns invite picnics under the shade of ancient trees, while the nearby Riddarparken features a modern play area for families. The charming Kaninholmen, accessible via the bridge, has become a favorite spot for barbecue outings, combining play areas with breathtaking views.
Crossing the bridge brings you to the new Ljungaviken district. Here, a thoughtfully designed area features a playground with fruit trees and a welcoming grill pavilion, offering opportunities for both activity and relaxation.
Sölvesborg Bridge is a place where history meets the future, design meets nature, and every visit offers new perspectives on this charming seaside town.
