Tuesday lecture - Blekinge's older Stone Age in a new perspective

During the excavations in Ljungaviken outside Sölvesborg, archaeological discoveries were made several metres underground. The large, well-preserved settlement provided a new picture of the Scandinavian Stone Age.

Beskrivning

The image of the Early Stone Age has traditionally been that it was characterised by great mobility, low population numbers and relatively uncomplicated societies. Preliminary results from the investigations in Ljungaviken indicate that this was a simplified and perhaps incorrect picture.

Already 2,000 years before the introduction of agriculture a highly developed society with large settlements seems to have existed in Blekinge. Blekinge was probably not different from other places in Scandinavia. But it was precisely in Ljungaviken that a large settlement was preserved through fortunate circumstances and a very rapid rise in sea level.
